Chris Johanson monograph explores artist's shift to peaceful art and institutional recognition

publication · 2026-04-22

In 2013, Phaidon Press released a 160-page monograph dedicated to Chris Johanson, available for $59.95 and containing 200 color illustrations. The book includes a career overview by Bob Nickas, an interview conducted by Corrina Peipon, an essay penned by Julie Deamer, and writings authored by Johanson himself. Emerging from the vibrant music and art scenes of San Francisco in the 1990s, Johanson utilized leftover materials from house painting and items found in dumpsters. He showcased his work at P.S. 1 and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago in 2009, followed by two exhibitions at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2010 and 2011. The interview highlights his transition to more peaceful art, while Nickas's essay places him outside the realm of Pop Art. His 2004 piece, I AM CLEAR NOW, is featured on the back cover.
