Chris Dercon appointed president of Réunion des musées nationaux-Grand Palais
Beginning in January 2019, Chris Dercon will take on the role of director at the Grand Palais and Musée du Luxembourg in Paris. His appointment as president of Réunion des musées nationaux-Grand Palais, confirmed by French culture minister Franck Riester, marks a shift from the norm, as this position is usually filled by administrators rather than curators or art historians. Dercon, who has previously held the directorship at Berlin's Volksbühne Theatre and London's Tate Modern, concluded his time at the Volksbühne in April 2018 due to pushback against his art-centric programming. The Grand Palais, which hosts events like Fiac and Paris Photo, will begin significant renovations in late 2020, aiming for a reopening in January 2023. He takes over from Sylvie Hubac, who transitioned to the Conseil d'Etat in June.
