Chris Dercon Appointed Director of Tate Modern

Chris Dercon, former director of Witte de With in Rotterdam and Haus der Kunst in Munich, has been appointed director of Tate Modern in London. Known for pushing artistic and institutional boundaries, Dercon aims to counter the commodification of art through intellectual rigor and engagement with the present. His career includes programming at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center in New York under Alana Heiss, where he organized exhibitions of Helio Oiticica, Franz West, and others. At Witte de With, he showcased John Knight, Remy Zaugg, and Lawrence Weiner. He later directed Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, where he invited curators like Hubert Damisch and artists Jeff Wall and Hans Haacke. At Haus der Kunst, he transformed the institution by opening archives, alternating major shows (Gerhard Richter, Anish Kapoor) with explorations of Istanbul and Sharjah, and staging performances like Allora & Calzadilla's deconstruction of Beethoven's Ode to Joy. Dercon's approach blends past and present, creating open platforms for hybrid forms. He has collaborated with figures such as Catherine David, Vicente Todoli, and Philippe Vergne. His appointment at Tate Modern coincides with the museum's major expansion, which will develop spaces for contemporary creation. Dercon seeks to make the contemporary museum an alternative to art market pressures, maintaining content rigor and freedom amidst constraints.
