Chou Yu-Cheng's Conceptual Interventions Challenge Exhibition Economies and Worker Narratives
Chou Yu-Cheng utilizes minimal and carefully crafted 'tricks' to subtly alter meanings and scrutinize value creation within institutional contexts. His pieces, including TOA Lighting (2010) and Rainbow Paint (2011), advocate for the exchange of art objects with the structural elements of venues, thereby challenging existing patronage frameworks. In A Working History – Lu Chieh-te (2012), he employed a nearly sixty-year-old temporary worker, Lu Chieh-te, to chronicle his 45-year work history through interviews with a ghostwriter, resulting in a published booklet. This work garnered the Grand Prize at the Taipei Arts Awards, thrusting Lu into the spotlight. In the project's second phase, Lu took on the role of a security guard at the exhibition, safeguarding his own narrative, which emphasized the tension between his physical presence and newfound fame. Chou's practice acts as a catalyst, creating a dynamic environment that intervenes through language and methods to propose enhancements. His project Molyneux is currently exhibited at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum until 30 November. This profile was initially featured in the Autumn & Winter 2014 edition of ArtReview Asia, in partnership with EFG International, as part of the 2014 FutureGreats Asia series highlighting ten artists. Chou's methodology steers clear of flashy installations, concentrating instead on revealing the unseen aspects of exhibition processes and questioning who participates in value assessment.
