Choreographers Lacey, Buffard, and Lauro Explore Body and Identity at Lyon Biennale

festival-fair · 2026-04-23

Choreographers Jennifer Lacey, Alain Buffard, and Nadia Lauro presented works interrogating bodily constitution and identity at the 2001 Lyon Biennale of Contemporary Art. Lacey's '$Shot' (with Nadia Lauro, Zeena Parkins, and Erin Cornell) draws on gay and manga pornography, minimalism, and feminist theory to explore perception and image production. Buffard's 'Dispositif 3.1' (with Anne Laurent, Laurence Louppe, and Claudia Triozzi) reworks Mike Kelley and Paul McCarthy's 'Heidi: Midlife Crisis Trauma Center' to question learning, gender, and institutional power. Both artists challenge traditional choreography and theatrical conventions, emphasizing process, fabrication, and the permeability of bodies and identities. The works were shown at the Musée d'art contemporain de Lyon in September 2001.
