Choque Cultural's Escola Criativa Project Uses Urban Art to Transform Public Education in São Paulo

institutional · 2026-04-23

The Escola Criativa project, launched in 2011 by the Instituto Choque Cultural, has worked in over 40 public schools in São Paulo, reaching approximately 275 teachers and thousands of children and youth. Led by educator Raquel Ribeiro and gallery partners Baixo Ribeiro and Mariana Martins, the initiative employs urban art interventions to rethink pedagogical activities and physical school spaces. The project critiques the traditional 'banking' model of education described by Paulo Freire, aiming to create more welcoming environments that stimulate creativity. By bringing established urban artists into schools, it seeks to resignify common areas and offer conceptual training to ensure transformations continue after interventions. The pandemic shifted dynamics from large community painting events to artist-only executions, with process documentation shared via virtual cultural gatherings. Escola Criativa is currently active at Escola Estadual Brigadeiro Faria Lima, with upcoming interventions at Escola Municipal de Educação Infantil Gabriel Prestes and Escola Estadual Caetano de Campos by the Coletivo Cicloartivo and artists Gitahy, Jota, Presto, and Tec. The project is one of three fronts for the Instituto Choque Cultural, alongside the Ponte initiative for artistic exchange and the Redes project advocating for democratic urbanism linked to culture.
