Chodowiecki's 300th Birthday Celebrated with Exhibition at Veste Coburg

On the occasion of Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki's 300th birthday, the Kunstsammlungen der Veste Coburg presents a studio exhibition from July 9 to October 25, 2026. The show, curated by Prof. Dr. Stefanie Knöll, head of the Coburg Kupferstichkabinett, was developed in collaboration with students from the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. It highlights Chodowiecki's diverse graphic and drawing oeuvre, including intimate sketches of family members and series reflecting Enlightenment ideals. The exhibition features over 4,000 prints and 200 drawings from the collection, which was founded by Duke Franz Friedrich Anton (1750–1806). Notable works include the 1771 etching 'Cabinet d'un peintre,' a family portrait created at the request of Chodowiecki's mother. The artist, born in Danzig in 1726, worked in Berlin from the 1740s and became a leading illustrator. The show is part of an international cooperation project, with a smartphone app offering additional information.
