Chloé Zhao's 'Nomadland' Sweeps Critics Choice Awards 2021

At the 2021 Critics Choice Awards, Chloé Zhao's 'Nomadland' won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Adapted Screenplay, solidifying its frontrunner status ahead of the Oscars. The film, which had previously won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, follows Fern (Frances McDormand) as she becomes a modern nomad after the economic collapse of a company town in rural Nevada. Zhao cited a quote from Edward Abbey's 'Desert Solitaire' as inspiration during the four-month shoot. On the television side, 'The Crown' won Best Drama Series, with Emma Corrin and Josh O'Connor taking acting honors, while 'The Queen's Gambit' won Best Limited Series and Anya Taylor-Joy won Best Actress. 'Ted Lasso' won Best Comedy Series, with Jason Sudeikis and Hannah Waddingham winning acting awards. The ceremony also recognized 'Ma Rainey's Black Bottom' with Best Costume Design and Best Hair and Makeup, and Chadwick Boseman posthumously won Best Actor. Other winners included 'Promising Young Woman' for Best Original Screenplay, 'Soul' for Best Original Score, and 'Tenet' for Best Visual Effects. The Oscars are scheduled for April 25, with nominations announced March 15.
