Chinese museums go virtual as coronavirus shuts institutions

digital · 2026-04-27

As the coronavirus outbreak forces the cancellation of Art Basel Hong Kong 2020 and the closure of museums across China, the art world turns to digital solutions. Art Basel launches Online Viewing Rooms, a digital platform available from March 20, allowing visitors to view galleries and contact them for sales. The initiative replaces the cancelled Hong Kong fair, with participating galleries invited free of charge. Marc Spiegler, Global Director of Art Basel, stated that the rooms offer galleries an additional way to interact with a global audience, complementing essential personal interactions. Adeline Ooi, Director Asia of Art Basel, expressed hope that the platform will support galleries affected by the cancellation. Meanwhile, China's National Cultural Heritage Administration (NCHA) has urged museums nationwide to remain active on social media and websites, offering virtual access to collections. The government body encourages museums to use existing digital resources and launch online exhibitions to provide safe and useful services to the public.
