China's state-backed push accelerates brain-computer interface development

China is intensifying its state-backed efforts to advance brain-computer interface (BCI) technology, aiming to surpass Elon Musk's ventures in this frontier field. On Wednesday, PICC Property and Casualty, a major state-owned insurer, announced the nation's first commercial insurance policy covering invasive BCI implantation surgery. This initiative, launched in partnership with a hospital affiliated with Zhejiang University School of Medicine in Hangzhou, marks a significant step toward commercializing BCI technology. The announcement boosted BCI-related stocks in Hong Kong, with shares rising 1.59% on Wednesday. Notable gainers included Shanghai Heartcare Medical Technology (up 1.28%) and BrainAurora Medical Technology (up 1.65%). Hangzhou, a tech hub in eastern China, is home to leading startups such as AI firm DeepSeek and humanoid robot pioneer Unitree Robotics, underscoring the region's role in technological innovation. The coordinated efforts involve state insurance companies, investment banks, and local governments, reflecting a strategic push to accelerate the nascent industry's development.
