China's Avant-Garde Art Movement Emerges in Beijing

exhibition · 2026-04-23

In February 1989, Beijing hosted the groundbreaking exhibition 'Chine / avant-garde', the first of its kind in China. Organized primarily by Fei Dawei, the show featured a new wave of Chinese artists challenging both traditional norms and socialist realism. This avant-garde movement, which emerged in the late 1980s, sought aesthetic and political freedom. Following the Tiananmen Square protests later that year, the artists' struggle became even more urgent. Fei Dawei discusses the significance of this movement and the artists involved.
