China's Art Infrastructure Expands Despite Economic Challenges with New Institutions and Spaces

Despite global economic pressures and rising operational costs, China's art infrastructure continued significant expansion throughout 2024. In Shanghai, Chanel partnered with the Power Station of Art to launch Espace Gabrielle Chanel in November, establishing mainland China's first public contemporary art library. Also in Shanghai, Cheruby House debuted as the flagship venue for Cheruby, founded by collector Cherry Xu to bridge fashion and contemporary art through exhibitions and residencies. The Shenzhen Bay Culture Square opened in November as a 51,000-square-meter design complex by Ma Yansong of MAD Architects, featuring eight inaugural exhibitions including Anthony McCall's first mainland China show. Aranya Art Center Guangzhou launched in Guangzhou's Huadu district with German artist Wiebke Siem's first Asia solo exhibition. In September, the Museum of Women's Art became China's first institution dedicated to female artists, opening on the Yunnan-Sichuan border. These developments represent a mix of nonprofit, private, and brand-backed initiatives expanding China's cultural ecosystem amid political volatility and uncertain cultural appetite.
