China Pavilion at Venice Biennale: Continuum – Generation by Generation
Curated by Qiu Zhijie, the China Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale presents 'Continuum – Generation by Generation' at the Arsenale, exploring eternity and identity through Chinese tradition. Artists include Tang Nannan, Wu Jian'an, Wang Tianwen, and Yao Huifen. Yao Huifen, a Suzhou embroidery master, will reproduce 'Skeleton Fantasy Show' and contribute to Tang Nannan's 'The Forgotten Sea'. Wu Jian'an and shadow master Wang Tianwen create new works based on Ma Yuan's 'Twelve Images of Water Surging'. Meanwhile, the collateral event 'Memory and Contemporaneity' at Arsenale Nord, promoted by the Palace Museum, suffered a setback: a fire aboard the MSC Daniela container ship off Colombo, Sri Lanka, destroyed 52 works by 17 Chinese artists. The exhibition, curated by Davide Rampello, Gianfranco Maraniello, Wang Yamin, and Sun Jianjiun, will still open on May 11 with a revised setup. The main pavilion opens on May 13.
