China Marks' Sewn Works Survey at Zane Bennett
Over 200 sewn works by China Marks are on view at Zane Bennett Contemporary Art in Santa Fe, NM, from May 15 to July 11, 2026. The exhibition, titled 'Lucid Perturbations: The Sewn Drawings and Books of China Marks,' is the broadest survey of the artist's hypnagogic tableaux. Marks dedicated the last 23 years of her practice to producing more than 600 sewn works, pivoting from painting, printmaking, and sculpture at age 59 in 2000. Her composite pictography uses fabric scraps and thread to address themes of power, human relationships, and geopolitical issues, inverting Western cultural tropes. Gallery director Carina Evangelista describes the scenes as fostering 'a literary kind of pareidolia.' Marks views sewing/drawing as 'an uncanny truth-teller.'
