China donates 15,000 tonnes of rice to Cuba amid shortages

other · 2026-05-24

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel revealed on Sunday that a shipment of 15,000 tonnes of rice from China has docked at Havana's port. This delivery marks the initial installment of a total of 60,000 tonnes that China has pledged to send to Cuba, which is currently grappling with significant shortages. Diaz-Canel emphasized that the rice will benefit millions throughout all provinces, including the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud, as well as various health and education facilities. Since 1962, Cuba has been subjected to a US trade embargo, often cited as a reason for its food and medicine scarcity. In January, Cuba's oil imports from Venezuela diminished following US support for the ousting of Nicolas Maduro, leading to heightened sanctions and worsening blackouts.
