China dominates top 10 most innovative humanoid robot start-ups, LexisNexis report finds

On Tuesday, a study by LexisNexis identified six Chinese companies among the top ten most innovative start-ups in humanoid robotics, with the top five positions all held by Chinese firms. This ranking utilized the Patent Asset Index, which assessed factors like patent portfolio size, technological significance, and geographic reach of private start-ups that have created at least one bipedal robot. Leading the list were Shanghai's Fourier and AgiBot, Shenzhen's LimX Dynamics and Pudu Robotics, and Hangzhou's Unitree Robotics. Leju Robot from Shenzhen came in ninth. The only U.S. entries were Figure AI (sixth), Apptronik (eighth), and Agility Robotics (tenth), while Germany’s Agile Robots ranked seventh. The study highlighted a notable trend of innovation shifting towards China in three main humanoid technology areas: interaction systems, morphology, and control and planning architectures. Over the last decade, patent applications from Chinese inventors in interaction systems doubled, grew 2.5 times in morphology, and increased fivefold in control and planning architectures. LexisNexis attributed these findings to both the volume of patents filed in China and the market impact of these inventions, as well as their influence on future innovations.
