Chilean Pavilion at Venice Biennale Explores Peatlands and Selk'nam Culture

At the 59th Venice Biennale, running from April 23 to November 27, 2022, the Chilean Pavilion showcases "Turba Tol Hol-Hol Tol," a collaborative project by Ariel Bustamante, Carla Macchiavello, Dominga Sotomayor, and Alfredo Thiermann, under the curation of Camila Marambio. Set within the Arsenale, this immersive installation highlights the peatlands of Tierra del Fuego, promoting eco-cultural initiatives for both the Selk'nam people and Patagonian peatlands. The curatorial team comprises Bárbara Saavedra, Hema'nya Molina, and Juan Pablo Vergara. Thiermann noted the Biennale's significance in bringing attention to vulnerable ecosystems and marginalized communities. Marambio advocated for Chile's plurinational identity, moving away from nationalistic art, drawing inspiration from various prominent Chilean artists and intellectuals.
