Chiharu Shiota's Boat Installation at Louis Vuitton Megastore in Paris
Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota (born 1972 in Osaka) has created a site-specific installation titled "Where are you going?" at Le Bon Marché in Paris, the oldest department store on the Rive Gauche, now transformed by LVMH into a luxury megastore. The installation features a large wave made of threaded fabric, with 150 boats floating above viewers' heads. Shiota, originally a painter who studied in Germany and Japan, abandoned the brush for thread to construct new architectures. She spent two weeks realizing the project. The installation is on view until February 18, 2017 at 24 Rue de Sèvres, 75007 Paris. Shiota previously appeared in Italy in 2015 at the Japanese Pavilion of the 56th Venice Biennale, and returned to Europe two years later with this powerful work.
