Chicano Camera Culture Exhibition and Book Survey Six Decades of Lens-Based Art
Currently on display at the Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture, part of the Riverside Art Museum, is the exhibition titled 'Chicano Camera Culture: A Photographic History, 1966 to 2026,' which runs until September 6. Curated by Elizabeth Ferrer, this showcase highlights nearly 50 U.S. Chicana/o/x artists and includes 150 works, marking the first significant exploration of Chicano lens-based practices over the past sixty years. The exhibition is divided into eight thematic sections, such as 'Protests & Affirmations,' 'Border Stories,' and 'The Archive,' merging both traditional and innovative photographic methods. A companion book, published by University of Washington Press and featuring Thalia Gochez's photograph on the cover, accompanies the exhibition. It showcases early activist photographers like Luis C. Garza and María Varela alongside modern artists like Star Montana and Arlene Mejorado. After its debut in Riverside, the exhibition will tour nationally with the support of the Henry Luce Foundation. The catalog includes essays by Ferrer and other scholars, including Charlene Villaseñor Black and Jennifer A. González.
