Chicago Sinfonietta Pauses Programming Until 2027, Lays Off Staff

The Chicago Sinfonietta revealed a halt in its programming until 2027 and announced layoffs of its administrative team, leaving its roughly 60 musicians taken aback. The musicians received this news on Wednesday and are set to perform their last concerts this weekend in Naperville and Evanston. Their contract concludes on August 31, and there is no assurance of future employment. Timpanist Bobby Everson criticized the management for a lack of transparency regarding financial difficulties. President and CEO Sidney Jackson explained that this decision is intended to ensure a sustainable comeback in 2027, coinciding with the orchestra's 40th anniversary. Musicians expressed their disbelief, highlighting the Sinfonietta's commitment to diverse talent. Union president BJ Levy pointed out that the arts sector is under threat from funding reductions and economic pressures, disproportionately impacting marginalized communities. Attendance at concerts has not rebounded since the COVID pandemic.
