Chiara Guidi's Oedipus Myth Double Bill at Piccolo Teatro

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Piccolo Teatro di Milano dedicated a personal showcase to Chiara Guidi (born 1960 in Cesena), featuring two performances centered on the Oedipus myth: "Edipo. Una fiaba di magia" (a fairy tale for children) and "Edipo Re di Sofocle. Esercizio di memoria per 4 voci femminili" (a polyphonic secular oratorio). Both productions share scenography by Vito Matera and Guidi's distinctive approach to theatre, which she describes as existing "between infancy and voice." The fairy tale version uses allegorical characters—a spider, a mole-Tiresias, a bird-Creon, and bulb-seeds—to explore psychoanalytic themes of incest and identity uncertainty. The second piece transforms Sophocles' tragedy into a vocal exercise for four female voices (Angela Burico, Anna Laura Penna, Chiara Savoia, and Guidi as corifea), breaking narrative into words, syllables, and sounds to evoke the power of voice. The performances took place in 2023 at the Piccolo Teatro di Milano.
