Cherry Xu to Open CHERUBY House in Shanghai, Merging Art and Fashion
Cherry Xu, a Shanghai-based collector and patron, will inaugurate CHERUBY House on November 8, 2025, in Shanghai's Jing'an district. The independent cultural platform, located in a 1939 building once owned by banker and bibliophile Ye Jingkui, will host residencies, exhibitions, and research programs at the intersection of contemporary art and fashion. The inaugural show features Mexican artist and designer Bárbara Sánchez-Kane (born 1987 in Mérida), the first official resident. In 2026, multidisciplinary artist Tanat Teeradakorn will take up residency. Xu conceived the project during a 2023 collector residency at the Delfina Foundation in London. The name CHERUBY combines a Pokémon reference with Xu's own name and the word 'ruby,' symbolizing rarity and value. Xu began collecting works at the art-fashion intersection in 2020. The space aims to challenge cultural hierarchies and foster cross-disciplinary dialogue, with commissioned works central to its model. The curatorial team includes professionals from art, fashion, design, and critical theory; a director will be announced soon. CHERUBY House is adjacent to the historic United Library, founded by Ye Jingkui, a key figure in Chinese cultural heritage preservation.
