Chemnitz 2025: European Capital of Culture Program Unveiled
Chemnitz, the Saxon city of 250,000 inhabitants, will serve as the European Capital of Culture in 2025 under the theme 'C the unseen', aiming to reveal its overlooked architectural heritage—Wilhelminian and Art Nouveau buildings, Eastern modernism, industrial monuments—and the Ore Mountains region. Program director Stefan Schmidtke outlined over 100 projects and 1,000 events. The Purple Path, a sculpture trail spanning 38 municipalities, features works by Tony Cragg and Alice Aycock. Eight Makerhubs focus on textiles, urban art, cuisine, and technology to foster creative tourism. Infrastructure includes 30 projects: a visitor center in a renovated industrial building (opened May 2024), a former tram depot turned cultural space, and new parks. Key exhibitions: 'Silberglanz und Kumpeltod' at the State Archaeological Museum (opens Oct 24), an Edvard Munch show at Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz, European realist works from the 1920s-30s at Museum Gunzenhauser, and 'Tales of Transformation' at the Industrial Museum. The #3000Garages project will repurpose 30,000 identical DDR-era garages for art. Collaborations with Gorizia/Nova Gorica 2025 include the European Peace Ride (200 cyclists from Gorizia to Chemnitz) and a wine gift from Schloss Wackerbarth featuring Saxon, Slovenian, and Italian wines. The title was awarded by the European Union in 2020.
