Checksy Choi's Eotieum Transforms Seoul Bunker into Porous Vessel of Memory

Since 2026, Checksy Choi's exhibition, Eotieum: The Ply of Longing, has been showcased in a decommissioned Cold War anti-tank bunker located in Seoul, South Korea. This installation draws inspiration from Choi's grandmother's flight from North Korea during the Korean War, utilizing the bunker’s unique architecture. The highlight of the exhibition, Eotieum Vessel, is a 4.3-meter-long steel piece adorned with hand-torn hanji fragments. Visitors can interact with You May Pull the Vessel, which features a small hanji boat in the corridor. The second chamber displays Net Hug, a steel grid imprinted with hanji footprints. Additionally, two canvas pieces, Longing Extends North and Still, transform this material language into a two-dimensional form, examining themes of memory and connection amid separation.
