Charu Nivedita's novel Marginal Man explores identity and translation challenges in Tamil literature

publication · 2026-04-20

Marginal Man, a translation of Charu Nivedita's 2011 Tamil novel Exile, presents a fragmented narrative following the writer Udhaya through travels in India, France, Thailand, and Morocco. The book blends autofiction with diverse literary forms, including lists, letters, and travelogues, while addressing themes of caste, religion, race, and sexuality. Nivedita's previous translated work, Zero Degree, gained international acclaim in 2008 despite mixed reviews in Tamil literary circles, such as criticism from the late author Sujatha. The author's writing combines classical and slang registers, making translation difficult, and his subject matter is considered risky in an era of Hindu nationalism. Nivedita notes that Tamil is a marginal language globally and within Tamil Nadu, comparing writing there to being a musician under the Taliban. The novel includes a yantra as a gift to readers, though its spiritual aspects are downplayed to avoid categorization. Excerpts from Marginal Man appeared in the Spring 2018 issue of ArtReview Asia, published by Zero Degree Publishing at INR600 for the softcover. The work challenges conventions between high and low art, using humor, such as likening a G-string to an Indian loincloth, to critique societal norms.
