Charles Ray's First German Institutional Solo Show at Fridericianum

The Fridericianum in Kassel, Germany, will host Charles Ray's first institutional solo exhibition in the country, running from August 22, 2026, to January 3, 2027. Ray, born in Chicago in 1953 and based in Los Angeles since 1981, is recognized as a leading sculptor of his generation. Over five decades, his practice has expanded the possibilities of sculpture through conceptual rigor and complex fabrication, addressing structure, proportion, dimension, space, and mass, while reflecting social life, consumer and media culture, and fundamental human conditions. Rather than a retrospective, the exhibition is conceived as a response to Ray's historical ties to the venue, featuring his earliest work in the show, the group sculpture 'Oh! Charley, Charley, Charley…' (1992), created for documenta 9. The exhibition will bring together key sculptures from various periods, highlighting his enduring influence.
