Charles LeDray's Miniature Worlds: A Survey of Intimate Objects at the Whitney Museum
From November 18, 2010, to February 13, 2011, the Whitney Museum of American Art presented "Charles LeDray: workworkworkworkwork," a survey exhibition at 945 Madison Avenue in New York City. The show featured LeDray's meticulously crafted miniature sculptures spanning 25 years, exploring themes of identity, taxonomy, and social systems through domestic objects and garments. A central installation, "Workworkworkworkwork," displayed 588 tiny items arranged in 23 categories, originally created in 1991 to mimic homeless street vendors' wares at New York's Astor Place. Another piece, "Dispatch (#1)" from 1992, pinned 50 miniature blank books to a wall like insect specimens, questioning information and presentation. The series "Milk and Honey" (1994-96) comprised 2,000 glazed porcelain vessels referencing various historical periods, displayed on glass shelves to manipulate perspective. LeDray's most recent work, "Mens Suits," presented a knee-high replica of a used clothing store with hundreds of detailed garments, evoking unknown lives and personal histories. The artist's practice demonstrates a recurring interest in typology and manual process, with influences ranging from Agnes Martin's grids to Zen Buddhism. His miniaturized objects, while delicate and detailed, resist cuteness and instead provoke examination of individual identity within arbitrary social structures.
