Charles Andresen's 'Throw Paintings' Debut at Guided by Invoices Gallery in Chelsea
Charles Andresen presented his first solo exhibition at Guided by Invoices, a new Chelsea gallery, from November 3 to December 10, 2011. The Arizona-raised artist, who had worked quietly in New York for two decades, displayed eight modestly sized acrylic paintings created between 2001 and 2011. Curator Chris Byrne organized the show, which highlighted Andresen's distinctive 'Throw Paintings' technique involving poured pigmented gel and flung paint. Andresen's process prohibits any canvas manipulation after the initial impact, resulting in dense, colorful compositions with rhythmic blobs. Works like Gelb (2007) demonstrate his ability to create illusions of depth through gestural surface activity, while O'odham Rhythm (2001) offers tonal respite with rich browns. The exhibition references artistic influences including Willem de Kooning, Larry Poons, Stanley Boxer, and Jules Olitski. Andresen's paintings were noted for their jubilant abstraction and connections to contemporary sculptural work by Daniel Weiner. The gallery was located at 558 West 21st Street in New York City.
