Chang Yuchen's solo exhibition at Smack Mellon explores love, loss, and memory through video installations

Chang Yuchen's exhibition titled "For those who share mornings and evenings" took place at Smack Mellon in New York from September 27 to December 14, 2025. This showcase delved into themes of intimacy, absence, and memory following the passing of her husband, artist Yuan Yi. A five-hour video installation presented numerous screenshots from their long-distance video conversations (2011-2013), highlighting Chang in various daily scenarios. Yuan Yi appeared in select images, accompanied by the sound of Chang's breathing. A vintage television featured a continuous loop of snowflakes filmed by Yuan Yi in 2012, with subtitles detailing Chang's dreams after his death. The exhibition drew from Roland Barthes's "A Lover's Discourse" and resonated with Andy Warhol's "Sleep," merging their artistic endeavors.
