Chanel to Hold Métiers d'Art Show at Metropolitan Museum of Art in December
Chanel has announced that its annual Métiers d'Art collection show will take place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on December 4, 2018. The event marks the return of a fashion show to the Met's galleries for the first time since 1982, when Valentino presented its fall/winter collection there. Karl Lagerfeld launched the Métiers d'Art shows in 2002 to celebrate the craftsmanship of the house's 11 specialized ateliers, including Barrie Knitwear and Lemarié. The Met's Costume Institute is currently hosting 'Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,' which has drawn over one million visitors, making it the most visited exhibition in the institute's history. The show features papal vestments and accessories from the Vatican alongside designs from Alaïa, Balenciaga, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino, and others. This is not Chanel's first collaboration with the Met: in 2005, the museum dedicated an exhibition to Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel, featuring pieces from the Costume Institute, Chanel, and institutions like the Victoria & Albert Museum. The upcoming show will be held in the museum's spaces, transforming them into a runway.
