Chamfort's Complete Works Published by Sandre

publication · 2026-04-23

Lionel Dax has edited a new two-volume edition of Nicolas Chamfort's complete works, published by Éditions du Sandre. Chamfort (1740-1794) was a French moralist, academician, friend of Mirabeau, pamphleteer, secretary of the Jacobin Club, and administrator of the Bibliothèque nationale. Nietzsche considered him and Stendhal the most unrecognized free spirits in France, calling Chamfort part of the 'French miracle.' Chamfort's posthumous work, 'Produits de la civilisation perfectionnée,' was reconstructed by his friend Ginguené from his scattered notes. The edition includes Chamfort's odes, epistles, tales, plays, and critical writings, revealing a figure who balanced between monarchy and revolution.
