Chakaia Booker and Carol Rama's exhibition explores industrial modernity's violence at Galerie Isabella Bortolozzi
Galerie Isabella Bortolozzi in Berlin presents 'Against the Day,' a joint exhibition featuring works by Chakaia Booker and the late Carol Rama, whose estate the gallery manages. The show runs from 14 February to 25 March across three rooms. Booker contributes six photographs titled Founding Warrior Quest (II 21C) from 2010, depicting the African-American artist in a scrapyard, alongside wall-based sculptures made from scrap automobile tires, including Random Request (2022) and Superstition (2010). Rama's three mixed-media works include Bricolage (1966), which incorporates nails and dolls' eyes, and Definizione d'usura (1977), featuring bicycle inner tubes on a wire frame. Both artists address themes of industrial production, modernity, and masculinity, with Booker focusing on American racial violence and Rama reflecting on her father's suicide in 1942 after his automobile and bicycle factory went bankrupt. The exhibition's title references photographic technique, symbolizing the artists' contrary approaches to their subjects.
