ChaChaanTeng creates physical 'auto-mayo-mat' for Heinz Mayo

architecture-design · 2026-07-30

London-based design studio ChaChaanTeng designed and built a physical world for Heinz Mayo, including the UK's first automated sandwich vending machine serving mayonnaise-based sandwiches, launched for National Picnic Week. The 'auto-mayo-mat' concept was created by creative studio Hot Sauce. ChaChaanTeng previously worked on the identity for Heinz x Morley's. Director Wei Prior emphasized focusing on the experience of food and the novelty of automats, drawing inspiration from Japanese vending machines, 7-Eleven culture, Amsterdam chain FIBO, and mid-century American design. The identity was applied to merchandise, posters, packaging, and the vending machine itself. Animator Leah Putnam created a 25-second frame-by-frame animation reminiscent of old advertisements, which also became a poster. The project is a tactile counter to AI slop and disposable digital content, with Heinz showing conviction to realize the idea.
