Cesare Tacchi Retrospective at Palazzo delle Esposizioni Reveals Complex Artist
A comprehensive retrospective of Cesare Tacchi (Rome, 1940–2014) is on view at Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome, curated by Daniela Lancioni and Ilaria Bernardi. The exhibition traces Tacchi's evolution from early abstract works like 'Figura' (1959), influenced by Alberto Burri and Franz Kline, through his iconic relief paintings of the mid-1960s, to his later conceptual and poverist phases. Highlights include 'Giallo Cromo' (1961) and 'Senza Titolo' (1961), showing affinities with Louise Nevelson; 'Circolare Rossa' (1963) and 'Piazza Navona dall'automobile' (1964), referencing Futurism and Francis Picabia; and the relief series 'Poltrona Rossa' and 'Poltrona Gialla' (1964). The show also features Tacchi's conceptual works from 1968 onward, such as 'Cancellazione d'artista' (1968), performed at the Teatro delle Mostre at Galleria La Tartaruga, and 'Io sono-Tu sei. Due basi per un colloquio' (1972). Tacchi's engagement with mass media, pop culture, and philosophy (Foucault, McLuhan) is underscored. The exhibition includes previously unseen works and runs at Palazzo delle Esposizioni.
