Cesare Pietroiusti and Ginestra Bianconi in Dialogue on Art and Mathematics
The Artribune podcast 'Contemporaneamente' features a dialogue between artist Cesare Pietroiusti and mathematician Ginestra Bianconi, exploring intersections of art, mathematics, and network theory. Pietroiusti, a Rome-based artist and former medical doctor, co-founded the Jartrakor Study Center and the Psychology of Art magazine in 1977. He coordinated Oreste projects from 1997 to 2001, served as president of PalaExpo in Rome (2018–2022), and co-founded the Lac o Le Mon Foundation in San Cesario di Lecce in 2015. He taught visual arts at IUAV Venice (2004–2015) and Lesley University Boston (2009–2016). His recent work focuses on exchange and paradoxes within economic systems. Bianconi is a professor of mathematical sciences at Queen Mary University of London and an Alan Turing Fellow at the Alan Turing Institute. She develops complex network theory, authored 'Multilayer Networks' (Oxford University Press, 2018) and 'Higher-order networks' (Cambridge University Press, 2021), and received the 2020 Network Science Fellowship for contributions including Bose-Einstein condensation in complex networks. The podcast, curated by Mariantonietta Firmani, founder and director of Parallelo42 contemporary art, discusses relational art, individuality, and creativity in scientific research.
