Cesare Manzo, founder of Fuori Uso, dies; remembered by Giacinto Di Pietrantonio

Cesare Manzo, the visionary gallerist and founder of the Fuori Uso exhibition in Pescara, has died. In a tribute published on Artribune, Giacinto Di Pietrantonio, director of GAMeC in Bergamo, recalls Manzo's pivotal role in launching the careers of artists such as Vanessa Beecroft, Maurizio Cattelan, and Tino Sehgal, and providing a platform for established artists to experiment. Fuori Uso, described as Manzo's most important creation, operated outside the conventional art system, relying on temporary venues and Manzo's personal funding, including the sale of two of his newsstands. Di Pietrantonio criticizes institutions for failing to institutionalize Fuori Uso, despite its national and international success, leaving it perpetually precarious. He quotes artist Getulio Alviani, who praised Pescara's unique spirit of ambitious, naive courage exemplified by Fuori Uso and the earlier 'Il mondo delle idee' project by Mario Pieroni. Di Pietrantonio hopes that Manzo's death will spur institutions to finally realize his dream of making Fuori Uso a permanent institution.
