Cesare Leonardi: The Architect Who Chose Substance Over Stardom

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

Cesare Leonardi (1935–2021) was an Italian architect and designer whose Nastro chair, praised by Ron Arad as the perfect seat, is in the permanent collections of MoMA, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Vitra Design Museum. Despite early success—exhibiting at MoMA's 1972 'Italy: The New Domestic Landscape'—Leonardi's design career stalled when his manufacturer withdrew. He pivoted to architecture, working with Franca Stagi from 1963 to 1983. Leonardi studied at Florence under Leonardo Savioli, apprenticed with Marcello D'Olivo, and developed the Struttura Reticolare Acentrata (SRA) for parks like Parco Amendola and Parco della Resistenza in Modena, and the Centro Nuoto in Vignola. His passion for photography led to systematic series of trees and a monumental survey of Modena Cathedral (1983–84). With Stagi, he co-authored 'L'architettura degli Alberi' (Mazzotta, 1982), a definitive tree-architecture reference. Leonardi's design ethos emphasized minimal material waste, exemplified by chairs made from a single 150×50 cm board. He rejected fashion-driven design, focusing instead on structural integrity and nature's laws.
