Ceretto family celebrates 20 years of Sol LeWitt and David Tremlett's Barolo Chapel

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-04

On September 21, 2019, the Ceretto family, renowned Piedmontese winemakers and art patrons, will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Cappella del Barolo, a chapel decorated in 1999 by Sol LeWitt and David Tremlett. The chapel, located atop the Barolo vineyards, was the first of many contemporary art and architecture projects funded by the Ceretto winery. Subsequent projects include the panoramic Cubo at Bricco Rocche (2000) by architects Luca and Marina Deabate and Polar Glass of Turin, and artworks at restaurants La Piola and Piazza Duomo in Alba (2005), including a fresco by Francesco Clemente. To mark the anniversary, numerous events are planned for autumn 2019, including a walk organized with Torino Spiritualità on September 14, led by Riccardo Falcinelli, focusing on the chapel's colors. The exhibition "Keeping Time," conceived by the Ceretto family with the artists' heirs and curated by Guy Robertson (director of Mahler-LeWitt Studios) and Tony Tremlett, will be held for the first time in the vineyards of Brunate, in the spaces of the former Ceretto distillery around the chapel. A book published by Corraini will collect unpublished documents and trace the history of the project that united the Langhe region with contemporary art. Roberta Ceretto noted the surprise at how art has become a central component of their activity, attracting tourists on a modern pilgrimage to the chapel.
