Centuripe Archaeological Museum fully reopens after decades of partial access

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

On June 7, 2024, the Museo Archeologico Regionale di Centuripe, located in Sicily, will reopen its doors fully after years of limited access. Established by the Siculi in the 8th century BCE, Centuripe evolved into a Hellenized city by the 4th century BCE and later became a Roman center in the 1st century BCE. The museum houses collections from local excavations that began in 1951, featuring items from the Augustales building and a 1968 archaeological dig. This reopening is a joint effort involving the Assessorato per i Beni Culturali e l'Identità Siciliana, the Parco Archeologico e Paesaggistico di Catania e della Valle dell'Aci, and the Comune di Centuripe. Notable exhibits include the Testa di Augusto, which was returned in 2021, alongside a weekend of events with guided tours and a concert on June 8.
