Centro Pecci opens permanent collection wing with theatrical Formafantasma design

exhibition · 2026-04-27

For the first time, the Centro Pecci in Prato has dedicated a permanent wing to its collection of 1,200 works, with 50 pieces selected by director Stefano Collicelli Cagol. The installation, titled "Eccentrica," uses a theatrical fabric set designed by Formafantasma to navigate the challenging volumes of the bronze ring-shaped wing added in 2016 by architect Maurice Nio. The collection is divided into four sections: "Il Centro in una stanza" (large-scale works), "Il taglio è una macchina del tempo" (starting with a Lucio Fontana cut), "Italia Novanta" (Italian artists from the 1990s), and "Futuro Radicale" (radical architecture). The move follows the museum's 2016 expansion and a 2021 leadership change where president Lorenzo Bini Smaghi initially sought more populist exhibitions but instead appointed Collicelli Cagol, who maintained the museum's research-oriented focus. Concurrently, the new wing also hosts Lina Pallotta's first museum solo show, featuring photographs of trans activist Porpora Marsciano, while the historic wing continues Massimo Bartolini's exhibition before a Diego Marcon project takes over, coinciding with his upcoming show at Fondazione Trussardi in Milan.
