Centro Luigi di Sarro's ARP Residency Fosters Young South African Artists

institutional · 2026-05-04

The Centro Luigi di Sarro in Rome has operated for ten years as an observatory on contemporary African art trends, notably through its ARP-Art Residency Project, launched in 2009. The program supports emerging artists, particularly those outside the art system, offering a first chance and a complete human and artistic experience. Vice president Alessandra Atti di Sarro explains that ARP targets young artists at the beginning of their careers, providing exposure to new scenes and cultures. In Cape Town, Massimo Dal Corso facilitates encounters with the city's history. The residency is informal but will soon be restructured in collaboration with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura. Artists who participate remain in the center's collection and network. Atti di Sarro notes that young South African artists, born post-apartheid, are heavily influenced by the West, having been catapulted from traditional media like charcoal drawing and xylography into a globalized art world. She sees a transitional phase where those who bridge the gap will produce interesting work. Institutions like the newly opened MOCAA in Cape Town are private-funded, while public institutions struggle with funding and decaying structures. Notable initiatives include William Kentridge's experiment in Johannesburg.
