Centro Botín presents first major Marisol drawing retrospective

exhibition · 2026-05-15

In Santander, Spain, the Centro Botín is presenting a significant retrospective of Marisol Escobar (Paris, 1930 – New York, 2016), a notable Venezuelan-American artist from the 1960s New York art scene. Titled "Marisol: Cuando todo está por comenzar," the exhibition will be open from May 23 to October 25, 2026, showcasing over a hundred drawings spanning from 1949 to 2016, many of which have recently been uncovered. The display features prominent sculptures, archival materials, and films. Curated by Laura Vallés Vilchéz, it explores Marisol's journey through three phases of "displacement." She was educated at the Art Students League and took part in significant exhibitions, such as MoMA's "The Art of Assemblage," and represented Venezuela at the 1968 Venice Biennale. Notable pieces include Women and Dog (1963-64) and Indian (1969).
