Centre Pompidou to Close for Five-Year Renovation by Moreau Kusunoki

architecture-design · 2026-04-26

The Centre Pompidou in Paris will undergo a major renovation starting in 2025, closing until 2030. The project, costing over €260 million, will be led by Franco-Japanese studio Moreau Kusunoki, selected from over 80 candidates. The renovation addresses safety (asbestos removal), sustainability, and accessibility, while preserving the iconic building's original spirit. Key changes include a redesigned Forum on three levels, an expanded Agora, a new intergenerational Pôle Nouvelle génération with a children's library, and a reconfigured Atelier Brancusi for a research center. The library will be reorganized, and a new area called Archipel will merge museum and library collections. Public services will be grouped in the south wing. The definitive project is due March 2025, with partial closures starting then, full closure in December 2025, and construction beginning April 2026. The museum was originally scheduled to reopen by 2027 for its 50th anniversary but will now remain closed until 2030. The French Court of Auditors has issued a warning about financial resources for the project. Renzo Piano, the original architect, endorsed the winning design.
