Centre Pompidou's Global Expansion Continues Despite Pandemic Delays

institutional · 2026-04-20

The Centre Pompidou is advancing its international expansion efforts, which were momentarily hindered by the pandemic, with several initiatives underway. Serge Lasvignes, the museum's president whose contract was renewed this year, announced a postponed agreement to establish a branch in Seoul. Recently, the Pompidou's Shanghai site hosted 'Design and the Wondrous', an exhibition showcasing a hundred pieces. This collaboration with the state-owned West Bund Group will provide the Paris institution with €2.75 million annually for five years. Additionally, plans are set to convert a former 35,000sqm Citroën garage in Brussels into the city's largest art center, expected to open in 2023, with Swiss artist John Armleder already scheduling events. The Paris museum also held a Christo and Jean Claude retrospective and introduced a museum-experience videogame, while theorist Paul B. Preciado led a weeklong conference, underscoring its commitment to cultural diplomacy and institutional development.
