Centre Pompidou Mounts Major Survey of New Objectivity in Weimar Germany

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Centre Pompidou in Paris presents 'Allemagne / Années 1920 / Nouvelle Objectivité / August Sander', the first major French exhibition dedicated to the New Objectivity movement in Germany. Featuring over 900 works and documents, the show spans painting, photography, architecture, design, cinema, theater, literature, and music. Curated by Laurence Le Bris, the exhibition offers a dual perspective: a thematic overview of the movement and a monographic focus on photographer August Sander's seminal series 'Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts' (People of the 20th Century). The eight thematic sections correspond to Sander's seven socio-cultural categories: The Farmer, The Worker, The Woman, The Estates, The Artists, The Great City, and The Last People. The installation, designed by Le Bris, immerses visitors in the cultural production of the Weimar Republic (1918-1933) on the eve of Nazism. The exhibition concludes with a projection by artist Arno Gisinger tracing the fate of works deemed 'degenerate' after 1933. Notable highlights include Otto Dix's 'Portrait of the Dancer Anita Berber'. The show runs until September 5, 2022.
