Centre Pompidou-Metz Opens as Decentralized National Museum on May 15, 2010

institutional · 2026-04-23

On May 15, 2010, the Centre Pompidou-Metz, a national museum operating outside the central framework, officially opens its doors after ten years of development. The architectural design by Shigeru Ban and Jean de Gastines resembles a hut with a wooden roof, making it the most cost-effective museum in Europe per square meter. As an EPCC, the museum encompasses 11,000 square meters, divided equally between exhibition and logistical spaces. Director Laurent Le Bon highlights its autonomy from Paris, noting that no exhibitions will be sent there. The inaugural exhibition, titled "Chefs-d'œuvre ?", showcases 770 works from May 12 to October 25, 2010, a project spearheaded by Jean-Jacques Aillagon and Jean-Marie Rausch with local government support. Future displays will delve into aerial perspectives in 20th-century art.
