Centre Pompidou Jersey City project canceled due to high costs

architecture-design · 2026-04-26

The planned Centre Pompidou outpost in Jersey City, New Jersey, has been canceled due to unsustainable costs. Announced in 2021 with a projected 2024 opening, the project was to occupy a former industrial building renovated by OMA with Jason Long. The New Jersey Economic Development Authority withdrew its $58 million funding commitment, citing the lasting impact of COVID, global supply chain issues, rising costs, and an insurmountable operating deficit. The museum would have required $23 million in annual fixed expenses against projected revenue of $4 million. State analysts had estimated 100,000 to 250,000 annual visitors generating $5–14 million in local economic benefits, but these were deemed insufficient. Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, a key supporter, distanced himself from the decision, attributing it to political spats. The Centre Pompidou remains cautious, stating it is committed to discussions with the mayor to determine the project's future direction. Fulop left open the possibility of an alternative plan with private donors. The cancellation follows a French Court of Auditors report questioning the Pompidou's economic sustainability. Other international Pompidou projects continue in Belgium (Metz and soon Brussels), Málaga, Shanghai, AlUla (Saudi Arabia), and Seoul (with Hanwha Culture Foundation).
