Centre Pompidou extends Malaga partnership through 2025

institutional · 2026-05-05

The Centre Pompidou has renewed its agreement with the city of Malaga, extending the operation of its satellite museum until 2025. The original five-year deal, signed in 2014 and inaugurated in 2015, was set to expire in 2020. The extension was formalized in a protocol signed by Malaga mayor Francisco de la Torre and Centre Pompidou President Serge Lasvignes. The museum will remain at The Cube, a 6,000-square-meter space designed by Spanish studio L35 and decorated by French artist Daniel Buren. The Centre Pompidou will receive approximately €1.5 million annually for the use of its brand. The agreement, which must be finalized by March 19, 2019, commits both parties to a program of temporary exhibitions, dance events, performances, concerts, films, conferences, and workshops. Lasvignes noted that the Malaga museum is the first Pompidou-branded institution outside France and has attracted half a million visitors in three years, strengthening the city's position in the global art geography. Malaga has developed into a major cultural destination, with the Museo Picasso (2003), Museo Carmen Thyssen (2011), and CAC-Centro de Arte Contemporáneo among its notable institutions. The Centre Pompidou is also expanding to Brussels (opening in 2022 in a former Citroën garage designed by Alexis Dumont and Marcel Van Goethem) and Shanghai (negotiations ongoing, expected spring 2019 in the Xuhui district).
