Central American Biennial Launches Open Call to Recreate Aníbal López's Performances
The 10th edition of the Biennial of Central America, a traveling biennial similar to Manifesta, opens on August 30, 2016, in Costa Rica. Founded in 1998 by a group of local professionals and entrepreneurs, the biennial rotates among six member countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. Each country presents six artists. Curated by Tamara Díaz Bringas under the concept "All the Lives," the biennial features a special project honoring Guatemalan artist Aníbal López (also known as A-1 53167), who died in 2014 at age 50. López was well-known in Italy, having exhibited at Prometeo Gallery in Milan. The project, "Recreaciones A-1/2016," will create a digital archive documenting his works and actions. Additionally, the biennial has launched an open call for participants to recreate López's performances—without having previously participated in one—using any medium (text, video, photo). Submissions are due by August 7, 2016. Selected reinterpretations will be exhibited at Despacio in San José and later at YAXS in Guatemala City.
