Cento bandiere per Gaza: arte e attivismo salpano da Augusta

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-28

On April 26, 2026, a new civilian and non-violent mission to Gaza departed from the port of Augusta, promoted by the Global Movement to Gaza and the Global Sumud Flotilla. This is the second major sea voyage after September 2025, aiming to peacefully break the blockade and deliver humanitarian aid. For the first time, the flotilla carries a collective artwork: "Com'è il cielo in Palestina?" by artist Giovanni Gaggia. The work consists of one hundred Palestinian flags, collectively embroidered in various Italian cities, each bearing a fragment of a poem from Gaza. The project originated in 2023 within Pesaro 2024 – Italian Capital of Culture, later evolving into an installation at the Casa della Memoria in Milan. It involved workshops in cities including Turin, Rome, Ancona, and Nuoro. One flag features the phrase "Restiamo umani" by Vittorio Arrigoni, made for the fifteenth anniversary of his death in Gaza, and will be hoisted on the flagship. The hundred flags carry a letter from Gaza received by Silvia Severini during a previous mission, symbolically accompanying the crossing.
